Description

Sherri Helwig has been an independent arts consultant since 1992 (registered as S.L. Helwig & Associates in 1996), with a broad-based practice in evaluation, education, governance, policy and management services, and a wide-ranging client list of local, provincial, national, and international arts organizations and funders. Her consulting work is informed by many years of progressively responsible cultural management experience, including eleven years in executive leadership roles in labour-forward national arts service organizations, focused primarily on advancing the interests and rights of artists. Sherri complements her consulting with teaching as a permanent faculty member in the longest-running undergraduate Arts Management program in Canada at the University of Toronto Scarborough (the east campus of the University of Toronto). She has previously taught for Queen’s University, American University (in Washington D.C.), York University, Humber College, and the Harris Institute, and has lectured extensively across Canada and within the United States, Italy, Finland, Spain, China, and The Netherlands on subjects ranging from cultural entrepreneurship to comparative copyright policies to the impact and use of digital technologies to support, preserve and share creative production. Sherri has worked with several municipal, provincial, and federal teams (such as two years as an invited member of the National Editorial Working Group for the Canadian Cultural Observatory under the Department of Canadian Heritage), and has been appointed as a representative of the Canadian arts and culture sector for a number of national and international initiatives (including, for example, five years as an appointed member of an advisory committee for the voluntary sector under Industry Canada [now called Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada]). She has also served as a member of several boards, committees, advisory groups, grant review panels, and art juries in both the performing and visual arts, volunteered for more than a decade with Business/Arts as an artsVest™ Board Governance mentor, and currently serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Arts Management. Sherri is proud to be a Founding Member of Arts Consultants Canada.
