SYMPHONY NOVA SCOTIA SOCIETY: Feasibility Study for a Performing Arts Facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Symphony Nova Scotia (“the Symphony”) is seeking proposals from qualified consultants relating to a study into the opportunity for and the feasibility of a Halifax-based concert hall/performing arts facility suited to the specific needs of orchestral music. As one of Canada’s most engaging and exciting orchestras, the Symphony has nearly doubled its programming and audience reach over the past five years and is eager to explore possibilities for future growth.

The Symphony has achieved unprecedented growth in programming, audiences, and revenue over the past five years, ranking among the highest-achieving Canadian orchestras. However, the organization must continue to build on its strengths and grow capacity, particularly revenue generation capacity, to remain sustainable in the long term. The Symphony is reaching the limits of box office revenue generation and patron stewardship options available at its current venue in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium.

While some high-profile plans and projects are currently under development for new cultural infrastructure in Halifax, it is not readily evident how the needs of the Symphony will be met. Pressing facility needs combined with significant and active dialogue around cultural infrastructure in Halifax make the time right for the Symphony to enter the conversation in a formal and thoughtful way. To that end, Symphony Nova Scotia is commissioning an in-depth study of its facility needs to obtain expert advice on the optimal direction to take.
